Sophia SoHyun Kim is a Vancouver based artist. She is originally from Korea, Sophia draws inspiration from her childhood memories. She is also influenced by the splendour of the West Coast Rainforest. This is best reflected in her Rusty Birch Design collection.
Subtle textures, carefully scarred cups, plates, bowls and vases have a level of detail that stems from a person passionate about their craft.
Sophia's signature design since 2013
Clean and sleek lines add a modern look yet also combine with a hue that adds a vintage yet classic appeal.
The design is developed 2017 after the artist attended NCECA (Ceramic conference) in Portland.
To achieve the Birch texture the clay is extruded and then painted with several layers of a porcelain slip. Some pieces have broken edges to add a distinct wood character.
The design is developed 2018 by accident ( some people call it happy accident)
One hot summer day Sophia came to her studio and discovered that her work from the previous night had completely dried out. Normally to be able to apply the white slip ( liquid clay) the body clay should have the consistency of leather, but on this day it was hard and dry. Not willing to dispose of the clay she tried salvage what she had. The result was surprising. Ever since then this weathered iron look has been a staple of her work.
These carefully painted, etched and burnished art pieces are for everyday use. They are safe for food and can be put in the microwave or dishwasher.
